Earlier this year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the most authoritative source of scientific knowledge on climate change, has released its Working Group II report “Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability”. The scientists warn that the world faces unavoidable, multiple climate hazards over the next two decades, risks for society and nature are set to increase and will challenge our adaptative capacities.
The European Union is among the top funders of the research referenced by the IPCC. The Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) have substantially advanced our understanding of the changing climate, its impacts and provided a range of innovative adaptation solutions, both technological and nature-based.
To celebrate the release of the IPCC Working Group II report, the new publication by DG R&D puts a spotlight on the contribution of EU-funded projects to pushing the boundaries of world-class adaptation science as a key ingredient for enabling climate resilient development and a just transition. These results play an important role in the implementation of the EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change, including through the EU Mission on Adaptation to climate change.
The publication features 22 projects: COACCH, EUCP, EXHAUSTION, CASCADES, RECEIPT, XAIDA, ARSINOE, MED-GOLD, DOWN2EARTH, CONFER, PROTECT, FIREURISK, PROVIDE, IMPETUS, MYRIAD-EU, BRIGAID, TRANSFORMAR, RESCCUE, NAIAD, RECONECT, PHUSICOS, GROW GREEN
