On 22 July, the European Commission granted 562 Green Deal Seals of Excellence to highly innovative SMEs and start-ups successfully evaluated under the EIC Accelerator May call. All 562 proposals receiving the Green Deal Seals have undergone the same highly competitive selection under the EIC Green call, but due to the lack of financial resources could not receive funding from Horizon2020. The Green Deal Seals certify the high quality of these project proposals contributing to the Green Deal in order to help these companies access funding from other sources and therefore successfully implement their project.
The distribution per country and region of these Green Deal Seals is now available to national and regional authorities (including those managing Structural Funds) wishing to support these Green Deal Seal of Excellence proposals. In addition, they can join the Seal of Excellence Community of practice of funding authorities to receive information and assistance on the applicable rules when funding Seal of Excellence proposals and more detailed info on the Seals proposals for which the recipients gave their consent to disclose more details.
Background
As the European Commission set a clear goal towards a green and digital transition in the following years, over 2000 sustainable innovation companies have applied for financial support of €7.8bn from the one-off European Innovation Council Accelerator Green Deal call. Most of the companies proposed ideas contributing to the Green Deal goals to increase the EU’s climate mitigation and/or adaption ambition, transitioning of industry to a clean and/or circular economy and realising a zero pollution ambition and a toxic-free environment. In this call, the European Commission received applications from 38 different countries, with Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland and France hosting the highest number of applicants and a good level of participation of H2020 widening countries (10.6%).
