Background

EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027. They aim to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges by 2030, by putting research and innovation into a new role, combining it with new forms of governance and engagement with citizens.

The Commission launched the Mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030 in September 2021 with the adoption of a Communication on EU missions. As well as the Cities Mission, there are four other EU missions covering global challenges in the areas of adaptation to climate change, restoring our ocean and waters, healthy soils and cancer.

The EU Cities Mission supports the European Green Deal in building a low-carbon, climate-resilient future through research and innovation.
