17th EU-Canada Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee meeting

On 18 March 2025, Global Affairs Canada hosted the 17th EU-Canada Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee Meeting in Ottawa. The meeting was co-chaired by John Kur, Director-General, Investment Attraction, Innovation and Security, Global Affairs Canada and Signe Ratso, Deputy Director General, Innovation, Prosperity and International Cooperation, Directorate General for Research & Innovation, European Commission. 

After a review of recent research and innovation policy developments in Canada and the EU, the discussions focused on on-going EU-Canada cooperation and the prospects for wider and deeper cooperation and sharing of experience and best practice in areas including Research Security, Artificial Intelligence, Health research, Ocean and Polar research,  nuclear research and Energy research as well as opportunities for EU-Canada researcher mobility and cooperation offered through the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions and the European Research Council and the Canadian Tri-Agency Research Training Strategy. On innovation, following a presentation of the EU’s Competitiveness Compass and the Innovation Act, the discussion also identified a mutual interest in sharing best practice for developing accessible pathways to disruptive technologies for start-ups and scale-ups.
