Policy background

North Macedonia participates in the EU Research and Innovation programmes since 2007. Throughout these programmes, North Macedonia’s best performance has been are in the fields of Energy and Health. North Macedonia’s new programme for higher education and scientific research foresees actions to strengthen research capacity in line with the European Research Area priorities. These efforts are complemented by the development of a Smart Specialisation Strategy.

North Macedonia became fully associated member to Horizon Europe in January 2021.

Examples of international cooperation projects

  • ROCK (2017-2020) aims to develop an innovative, collaborative and circular systemic approach for regeneration and adaptive reuse of historic city centres. Implementing a repertoire of successful heritage-led regeneration initiatives, it will test the replicability of the spatial approach and of successful models addressing the specific needs of historic city centres. The project involves 10 cities, 7 Universities, 3 networks of enterprises, 2 networks of cities and several companies and development agencies, a foundation and a charity.
