Metrology

Research and innovation support for metrology and details of the Horizon Europe partnership on metrology.

Why does the EU support research and innovation for metrology?

Metrology, the science of measurement, is an enabler across all domains of research and innovation as well as an important component in manufacturing.

It supports amongst others the monitoring of the Emissions Trading System, of smart electrical grids and pollution and meets demands for measurement techniques for emerging technologies across many fields such as biotechnologies, new materials, health diagnostics or low carbon technologies.

Horizon Europe Partnership on Metrology

The European Partnership on Metrology is an institutionalised partnership established in 2021 by a decision of the European Parliament and the Council and managed by European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET).

It will be co-funded by participating states (including nearly all EU Member States) and the EU with an expected budget of over €660 million. It is the successor of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR).

This partnership aims to accelerate Europe's global lead in metrology research by establishing self-sustaining European Metrology Networks. It seeks to support new innovative products to respond to societal challenges such as health, environment and climate change and enable effective design and implementation of necessary regulation and standards.
