Why the EU supports research and innovation in this area
Nitrogen and phosphorus are vital for plant growth and are therefore used as fertiliser.
They are also emitted through combustion processes in transport and industry. But when they enter the environment in too large quantities, they end up polluting our soils, water and air, causing considerable environmental damage.
At a global level nitrogen and phosphorus are already exceeding safe planetary boundaries, representing a severe threat to life on Earth as well as to the climate. Europe makes a considerable contribution to this form of pollution.
Research and innovation is needed to establish how the EU can move to living within safe planetary boundaries for nitrogen and phosphorus, and identify ways to get there.
