The Republic of Moldova joins Horizon Europe research and innovation programme

Yesterday, in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union and its Member States finalised the association of the Republic of Moldova to Horizon Europe, the EU research and innovation programme (2021-2027).

Moldovan researchers and innovators can now participate in the €95.5 billion programme, under the same conditions as entities from the EU Member States.

Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, said:

I welcome the Republic of Moldova to our Horizon Europe programme. Under Horizon 2020 Moldovan participants received €7.4 million in areas such as researcher mobility, health, food, and the environment. I look forward to its continued success in Horizon Europe.

Commissioner Gabriel and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Ms Natalia Gavrilița, signed the association agreement to Horizon Europe in Brussels. This cooperation supports the ’Global Approach to Research and Innovation’ and further strengthens the alliance between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova to deliver on common priorities, such as the twin green and digital transition.

Success stories from Moldova in research and innovation are in particular visible in the areas of research Infrastructures, health and ICT domains. Project examples are: GÉANT, creating important research networks to promote scientific cooperation and access; RED-Alert project, an online content monitoring system in the fight against terrorism; Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH), preventing and treating mental health in children; CARE, creating structures to share knowledge in the fights against HIV/TB/HCV and  BLACK SEA HORIZON, improving STI co-operation and dialogue between the EU and the Black Sea region through a joint programme.

Background

The Republic of Moldova has been associated to the EU Framework Programmes since 2012. Moldova was the first Eastern Partnership country to become associated to the EU’s Framework programme in Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020 in July 2014. Moldova’s top Horizon 2020 participation was in Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, research infrastructures, Health, Food, Environment, Societies, Societal Challenges and Secure Societies.
