First EU gender equality champions to be awarded

In recognition of noteworthy strides towards gender equality carried out by academic and research organisations, the European Commission is delighted to announce the winners of the EU Award for Gender Equality Champions:

The awards are given across the categories listed above, with each winner receiving a prize of €100,000.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said: 

Promoting and ensuring gender-equal and safe working environments are a priority for the European Research Area. Today, we are rewarding EU Gender Equality champions, and thanking them to be an inspiration to other organisations to close the gender gap. Congratulations to our winners!

The award ceremony was chaired by Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and Peter Dröll, Director in the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and it was organized in the framework of the first EU Female Founders Forum Summit.

Background

The EU Award for Gender Equality Champions was created under Horizon Europe to:

The prize aims to raise public awareness of the importance of addressing gender equality through institutional change, but also the necessity of a high degree of commitment to the inclusive GEPs implementation.

It is also intended to create a community of champions that can inspire other academic and research organisations to become gender equality champions themselves.

Designed by the European Commission (DG Research and Innovation), the prize is managed by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) and its winners are selected by an independent expert jury for each prize category.
