Research and innovation

Policy background

Bosnia and Herzegovina participates in the EU Research and Innovation programmes since 2009. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s structural reform priorities encourage the competitive generation and distribution of knowledge through investing in research and development, clusters and small and medium-sized enterprises. In this way, BiH aims at increasing industrial competitiveness and achieving strong economic growth. International cooperation in research and innovation is a key component in this.

BiH’s strengths in the EU’s Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation are in the fields of Energy and Environment. The relatively high number of participants in the area of Innovation in SMEs underlines continuously growing number of participants and projects from BiH.

Bosnia and Herzegovina became fully associated member to Horizon Europe in January 2021.
