Increasing the valorisation of multidisciplinary research

Multidisciplinary research helps to transform knowledge into practical solutions that improve our everyday lives and addresses societal challenges. By integrating different fields of knowledge across disciplines and sectors, multidisciplinary research can provide new policy perspectives, human-centred innovations and business ideas.

However, the valorisation of multidisciplinary research results remains limited, and their uptake needs to be accelerated.

This is recognised under the new European Research Area (ERA) policy agenda 2025-2027. One of the actions ‘Upscaling knowledge valorisation capacities and activities’ aims to provide policy guidance on increasing the uptake of multidisciplinary research and innovation results.

Study on good valorisation practices

A study was launched in September 2025. It will provide practical guidance for research projects to create better value from their multidisciplinary research results, including Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). The outputs from the study, expected by summer 2026, will also inform the design of the policy guidance and contribute to the implementation of this ERA action.

Stay tuned to continue this conversation by joining a dedicated community to be created in spring 2026.

Background

A stakeholder workshop on the uptake of multidisciplinary and SSH results was co-organised by the European Commission and Universities Denmark

To fully realise the innovative potential of these research fields, participants called on researchers, innovators and policymakers to further engage in dialogue and seek collaboration. There is a need to develop practical pathways and enabling conditions, supporting multidisciplinary including SSH research results to create value.
