The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation has in place a working arrangement with the European Patent Office (EPO) to support initiatives in the field of knowledge valorisation, especially in promoting a modern and efficient intellectual assets management.
The EPO’s main mission is to assess patent applications and grant unitary and European patents, as well as to provide patent-related information and training. It offers platforms and services to help understand technology trends and guide efforts from innovative solutions to market commercialisation.
Since its launch in October 2023, the EPO’s Observatory on Patents and Technology has delivered studies, patent reports, technology platforms, and events, providing actors across the innovation ecosystem with reliable evidence to drive informed decision-making.
The EPO has launched a stakeholder consultation for the preparation of the second biennial work plan (2026 and 2027) of its Observatory on Patents and Technology. The aim of this consultation is to align the Observatory’s goals with the needs and expectations of everyone who has an interest in innovation, including policymakers, researchers, startups, SMEs, investors, IP professionals and the general public.
