What the Commission is doing
The European Commission is preparing an Advanced Materials Act, a key legislative initiative scheduled for 2026. A key deliverable of the Competitiveness Compass, the future Advanced Materials Act will aim at establishing a strategic framework for advanced materials that is crucial for industrial leadership, strategic autonomy and competitiveness in the EU.
The Act aims to create a comprehensive legal framework to support the design, development and deployment of advanced materials in the EU. It will address challenges in research and innovation ecosystems, streamline regulatory processes, and enhance production capacity of advanced materials in the EU. It is designed to foster a competitive industry by promoting circularity and reducing dependencies on critical raw materials.
Why the Advanced Materials Act is needed
Advanced materials are essential for Europe's transition to a sustainable and competitive economy. Given the current geopolitical landscape, Europe needs to strengthen its research, innovation and production capacities and accelerate their uptake in Europe. The advanced materials act will put forward measures to achieve open strategic autonomy on advanced materials, contributing to reducing dependencies on critical resources, and to enhance European competitiveness.
How to Get Involved
The Advanced Materials Act will impact a wide range of stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem. All interested parties had the opportunity to contribute to its design by participating in the call for evidence and public consultation until 13 January 2026.
The Commission is also carrying out targeted consultations with various stakeholders, including researchers, industries, SMEs and policymakers. All feedback will be carefully considered to shape the legislative proposal.
