Mission Ocean asked young people to share their ideas and priorities for the ocean and waters and were not disappointed!
On 1 July 2020, Mission Ocean joined an online session organised by the European Youth Forum with 36 participants from all over Europe and beyond (including Albania, India, Serbia, to name a few).
During the session – moderated by the Mission secretariat with the precious help of our All-Atlantic Ocean Youth Ambassadors, Eimear Manning and John Armstrong – participants offered their views on the main threats for our ocean and waters and potential solutions to restore a sustainable relationship with them.
Amongst the threats, they identified pollution, overexploitation, unsustainable tourism, climate change, lack of data, poor regulation and lack of education, awareness and connection to the ocean and waters.
Potential opportunities to make our societies more sustainable offered by the participants ranged from greener economies (including shorter supply chains) to more support for research and innovation as a key driver of solutions.
Interestingly, many issues and solutions raised by these youth representatives are found in the work done so far by the Mission Board of Experts, as member Cristina Pedicchio highlighted. Professor Pedicchio will bring the precious input collected during the online youth session to the Mission board colleagues for further discussion.
