Western Balkans in the EU Innovation Scoreboard

Assessing annually relative strengths and weaknesses of national innovation systems the recently published European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) 2020 is a tool for countries to assess relative strengths and weaknesses of national research and innovation systems, track progress, and identify priority areas to boost innovation performance.

More and more Western Balkan countries are being featured in this important publication, which is also a great tool to quantitatively measure the progress made through the implementation of programs such as the Horizon 2020 and the related research and innovation policies.

Montenegro (included for the first time in the EIS) and North Macedonia, both ranked as “modest innovator”, have registered a strong increase in their overall performances (5.0% and 14.8%, respectively), as well as in the number of most cited publications and foreign doctorate students.

Finally yet importantly, the EIS can show the progress made in the context of R&I international cooperation, as well as point out the regions where cooperation should and must be strengthened in light of the next EU research and innovation programme Horizon Europe
