Taiwan-EU online Dialogue on Application and Development of AI in Smart Medical (eHealth) Systems

On 20 October 2020 the ‘Taiwan-EU online Dialogue on Application and Development of AI in Smart Medical (eHealth) Systems’ took place.

This online event co-organised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the European Commission, DG Research and Innovation is the first of its kind in the last years.

The bilateral dialogue gathered officials and experts from industry, public services and academia from each side of the virtual table for an exchange of ideas on their respective development and roll out of the Applications and development of AI in Smart medical (e-Health) System. It is worth mentioning that AI and Health are part of the R&I clusters in the future "Horizon Europe" program for EU, and are also the key areas of Taiwan’s six major technological development priorities.

The new European Research Area communication and its geopolitical dimension was presented, In terms of EU-Taiwan cooperation in R&I, we notice that Taiwanese participation in co-funded activities has exponentially increased in our R&I programme from 38 projects in FP7 to 47 in Horizon 2020 with cofounding increasing from 7.7 MEUR to 17.4 MEUR respectively. Participation is strongest in the areas of ICT and Health R&I. We hope to see this trend continue under the upcoming Horizon Europe.

According to the Health Care Index (2019), Taiwan has the best health care system in the world. In addition, it is worth noticing that Taiwan is not only one of the leaders in manufacturing semiconductor hardware, but also has been developing its technological capabilities in artificial intelligence and big data applications to be applied in the fields of optoelectronics, biotechnology, semiconductors, and circular economy. Taiwan hence enjoys these strengths in both software and hardware sectors and is a reliable and solid partner in this area.
