Second special Horizon 2020 call attracts 454 proposals

By 11 June 2020 – the deadline for submissions – the 2nd special call for Expressions of Interests has drawn a strong response from the research community, with 454 proposals submitted in just over 3 weeks since the call was launched on 19 May.

Following the evaluation of these proposals by panels of independent experts, the results are scheduled to be announced by mid-August.

This 2nd special call for urgently needed research into the coronavirus is supported from the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation and contributes to the Commission’s €1.4 billion pledge to the Coronavirus Global Response initiative, launched by President Ursula von der Leyen on 4 May 2020.

This call will support research and innovation to adapt and strengthen capacity to manufacture and deploy readily available medical technologies and digital tools, in order to rapidly address urgent needs and better prepare for future emergencies. It will also improve understanding of behavioural and socio-economic impacts of the epidemic and support cohort studies in order to follow large groups of individuals to understand the behaviour of the disease and its impact. It complements earlier actions to develop diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.

The following topics are addressed:

2A. Repurposing of manufacturing for vital medical supplies and equipment
36 proposals received

2B. Medical technologies, Digital tools and Artificial Intelligence analytics to improve surveillance and care at high Technology Readiness Levels

2C. Behavioural, social and economic impacts of the outbreak responses
