Launch ceremony of the EOSC European Partnership during the R&I Days 2021

The new EOSC European Partnership will ensure until at least the end of 2030, a coordinated approach between the European Commission and the many stakeholders in Europe to grow and implement the EOSC ecosystem.

This was the launch event for the 11 new co-programmed European Partnerships, including the EOSC European Partnership, which will all run for 7 years under Horizon Europe. These partnerships are designed to ensure a structural and transformative impact of the E&I ecosystem in Europe. They will perform R&I to address pressing societal challenges in their chosen area of activity – ranging from the digital transformation to green deal challenges such as mobility or energy.

EOSC related quotes and comments:

  • Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said: “The European Open Science Cloud will enable researchers to find, create, share and reuse all forms of digital knowledge – such as publications, data and software - leading to new insights and innovations, higher research productivity and improved reproducibility in science. To successfully support the digital transformation of science, this important Partnership must involve all actors – the research communities, our Universities and research institutions, service providers as well as our Member States”.
  • Karel Luyben, President of the first EOSC Association, said: "This partnership will pave the way for deepening Open Science practices in the new European Research Area and for contributing to the EU digital agenda. EOSC shall be seen as the research foundation of all sectoral Data Spaces defined in the European strategy for data. There is an enormous innovation potential arising from combining research data with public and private data”. “The EOSC partnership will promote best practices by the research communities and foster interdisciplinary research. It will trigger better connections between Research infrastructures and e-Infrastructures to leverage data services existing in Europe. We are working on a cultural and technical transition in the way we do science in Europe and beyond. A more efficient and reproducible science trusted by society, more relevant to societal needs with increased involvement of society (e.g. through Citizen Science developments)".
  • Anna Panagopoulou, Director of the Directorate for ERA and Innovation (DG RTD), commented “The European Partnership for the European Open Science Cloud is a key pilot initiative to deepen the new European Research Area. It will be instrumental in mainstreaming Open Science practices, in particular share and reuse publications, data, and software leading to new insights and new discoveries”.
  • Thomas Skordas, Director of the Directorate on Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructure (DG CONNECT) commented: “Today we celebrate another important step towards the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) with the launch of the European Partnership for the EOSC, in close cooperation with the Members States and the respective research communities. Bridging existing European science infrastructures and research data with computing and fast connectivity networks will have major impact on how we conduct research in the digital age. Fostering multidisciplinary research across research communities by sharing data and services through a European-scale digital environment will lead to scientific discoveries and improved solutions in key societal areas such as environment and health”.

More on the EOSC European Partnership

The new EOSC European Partnership will ensure until at least the end of 2030, a coordinated approach from the European Commission and the stakeholders in investments and initiatives in the EOSC ecosystem with the help of the Member States (MS) and Associated Countries (AC).An EU investment of almost €500 million and an in-kind contribution of the partners of also €500 million are foreseen in the period 2021-2027. The aim is to improve the storing, sharing and reusing of research data across borders and scientific disciplines.
