In their third Policy Brief ‘Industry 5.0: A Transformative Vision for Europe - Governing Systemic Transformations towards a Sustainable Industry’, the independent ESIR expert group recommends a deep transformation of the European Industry to foster the twin green and digital transition in Europe. This transformation will support Europe’s ambition to become more sustainable, resilient, regenerative and circular whilst living within planetary boundaries.
The Policy Brief suggests to shift from an economic model based on ‘extraction and consumption’ to one that generates value from re-use, regeneration and reduction in consumption for people-planet-prosperity. Such shift requires a clear direction towards developing new designs for business models, value chains and supply chains; adopting new approaches to policymaking by acting at all levels of government and in partnership with business and industry; and building new capabilities and approaches to research and innovation.
Industry 5.0 was presented during the ESIR Final event. ESIR Chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève said:
“Post COVID 19 building resilience within our existing economy and transforming to a new set of economic ecosystems that are more resilient to future pandemics and environmental shocks should be Europe’s mission hence forth. Ensuring that European industrial development is oriented to achieving this goal and enabling the transition to the age of sustainable wellbeing for all is an essential step. This Industry 5.0 Policy Brief starts to unpack what that could look like.”
The Economic and Societal Impact of Research and Innovation (ESIR) expert group helps to design a forward-looking agenda that enables research and innovation policy to contribute to delivering on the political guidelines of President von der Leyen, notably the ‘European Green Deal’, ‘An economy that works for people’ and ‘A Europe fit for the digital age’.
