he Industry 5.0 Community of Practice plenary session, held today in Brussels, provides a platform for members to share best practices and explore future directions for achieving Industry 5.0 goals. The session brought together policymakers and stakeholders to discuss how the initiative can support the sustainable competitiveness of EU industries.
Marc Lemaître, Director General of DG Research and Innovation, opened the event, stating:
“The concept of an Industry 5.0 is a significant shift for European industries, as it brings together technological advancements and human-centered values. In just four years, it has earned a strong reputation and is increasingly visible in policies and initiatives across Europe. Today, we reflect on the achievements of the Community of Practice and discuss the next steps in building a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient EU industry."
The session comprised two parts: a high-level political discussion on "The Role of Industry 5.0 in Enhancing the Long-Term Competitiveness of EU Industries," followed by a collaborative session. In the afternoon the members brainstormed priorities for 2025, building on ideas from the final report.
The Industry 5.0 Community of Practice was launched by Directorate RTD.E in November 2023 to bridge the "connect the dots" gap, uniting Industry 5.0 pioneers and supporters from across Europe's innovation ecosystem. Over the past 10 months, the Community has produced its first deliverables, including an analysis titled "Industry 5.0 as a Transformative Agenda for Industrial R&I" and the "Prototype Industry 5.0 Learning and Assessment Tool," both of which were adopted and included in the final report.
What is Industry 5.0?
Industry 5.0 envisions a future where industries go beyond just efficiency and productivity, focusing on worker well-being and using technology for broader prosperity while respecting planetary limits. It places human values at the core of production, driving the digital and green transitions essential for Europe’s long-term success.
