Horizon Europe launch event in Turkey

A Horizon Europe launch event with a specific focus on increasing the participation of Turkish entities and in particular Turkish industries in the programme took place in Istanbul, Turkey on 21-22 March 2022 gathering more than 250 high level participants representing the Turkish research and innovation ecosystem physically and 400 virtually. 

The event was organized by the Scientific and Technological Research Institution of Turkey (TUBITAK) and was supported by Turkey in Horizon 2020 Phase II” Technical Assistance Project, co-financed by the EU and the Republic of Turkey and implemented by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Industry and Technology within the scope of the Competitive Sectors Programme.

Turkey officially became associated with the Horizon Europe Programme on 27 October 2021. Turkish researchers, innovators and academia are now able to participate under the same conditions as participants from the EU Member States.   

Keynote addresses at the opening ceremony were delivered by Prof. Dr Hasan MANDAL (President of TÜBİTAK), Ambassador Faruk KAYMAKCI (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs & Director for EU Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs and EU President), Mustafa VARANK (Minister for Ministry of Industry and Technology) and Mariya GABRIEL (European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth) and Ms Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.

The rest of the event hosted panel sessions in various fields, especially focusing on the industrial aspects in Horizon Europe, EIC and Clean Planet with the participation of the European Commission and Turkish stakeholders. An award ceremony celebrating successful Turkish stakeholders in the Horizon 2020 Programme also took place.
