In three Focus Papers, the independent ESIR expert group provides ‘deeper dives’ into the role of nations, regions and cities, universities, and global value chains as key ecosystems in the post-pandemic economy and society. The papers build on and complement ESIR’s second Policy Brief ‘Transformation post-COVID: Mobilising Innovation for People, Planet and Prosperity’.
The Focus Papers present concrete recommendations on how to boost each of the three ecosystems in the post-COVID era. In particular, they assess the role of nations, regions and cities as vectors for systemic change in post-pandemic Europe, analyse the role of European Universities in achieving systemic change and explore the question of how to protect, prepare, and transform EU industry and harness innovation to make global value chains more resilient.
ESIR offers guidance on how Europe can ensure fast learning from innovation, by notably providing strong advice for a forward-looking and transformative research and innovation policy, and how such a policy can better contribute to boost the sustainability and resilience of our economies and societies.
The Economic and Societal Impact of Research and Innovation (ESIR) group helps to design a forward-looking agenda that enables research and innovation policy to contribute to delivering on the political guidelines of President von der Leyen, notably the ‘European Green Deal’, ‘An economy that works for people’ and ‘A Europe fit for the digital age’. The group will initially run until 31 December 2021.
