With “RePowerEU”, the EU acted quickly on its answer for more affordable, secure and sustainable energy. The spike in conventional energy prices and concerns regarding security of supply hits EU energy-intensive industries particularly hard. This makes the case for a fast implementation of the ERA low-carbon technologies roadmap even more compelling.
The findings are, on the one hand, alarming as the investments are insufficient to reach the 2030 climate targets and the technology integration across sectors and regions is insufficient. On the other hand, they are encouraging because Europe has the technologies to reach the 2030 targets, the instruments to de-risk investments, to lower the cost for fast deployment of the innovative low-carbon technologies, notably by launching an industrial alliance or similar initiative based on the successful models for hydrogen, batteries and raw materials, and using the tested cooperation mechanisms under the ERA for mutual learning and policy support to accelerate sector integration and to facilitate the authorisations for first-of-a-kind installations.
The event on 3 June 2022, co-organised in partnership with the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the EU and the Federation of German Industries, marked the start of the implementation phase of the roadmap across EU.
