Have your say on the future of research and innovation cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean region: join the online consultation process on 17 March.

On 17 March (09h00-11h00), the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Platform in Research and Innovation, co-chaired by the European Commission and Jordan, will kick off a consultation process that will outline the future course of the research and innovation cooperation between the EU and the Mediterranean region.

The virtual meeting will bring together members of the newly established Expert Group, together with key stakeholders from national contact points and relevant research institutions and organisations as well as the members of the Bureau of the Union for the Mediterranean Research and Innovation Platform. Together they will outline the way forward: register for the meeting and join the conversation.

This first event is part of a consultation process that will run online for over 2 months. The first meeting will be the occasion to present the three Roadmaps on health, renewable energy and climate change developed by members of the Expert Group, established in June 2020.

Participants will also discuss the horizontal integration aspects of the UfM priorities. In addition to the three priority areas, the consultation process will focus on the following issues: linkages between research and innovation, the major threats faced by research and development in the Mediterranean region, and how regional cooperation on science, innovation and development benefit local societies and contribute to a sustainable process.

By building on its longstanding commitment for an effective Euro-Mediterranean regional cooperation agenda, the new consultation process of the UfM Regional Platform in Research and Innovation is expected to lay the foundation for tailored research and innovation strategies, national plans, as well as investments to common challenges.

Background information

The UfM Regional Platform in Research and Innovation actively supports the sustainable development of the Mediterranean region and plays a central role in stimulating and monitoring Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the fields of research and innovation.

In June 2020 the Platform initiated an Expert Group and developed draft Roadmaps (Theory of Change and Impact Pathways – TCIPs) in the priority areas of health, renewable energy and climate change. These Roadmaps (TCIPs) set out the main challenges in the region from the perspective of research and innovation collaboration between Member States of the UfM, as well as potential intervention areas for enhancing this collaboration in the coming years.
