Fostering knowledge valorisation through the arts and cultural institutions

How are arts and cultural institutions across Europe responding to the opportunities to foster innovation and knowledge valorisation as prioritised in the new European Research Area (ERA)? A study, commissioned by the European Commission, is currently looking into this question. It will examine conditions, support mechanisms and policy instruments that would enable the arts and cultural institutions, in collaboration with research, innovation and knowledge transfer actors, to play an important role in the uptake of new creative solutions that derive from research and are co-created with citizens and industry. Another focus is spreading good practices across Europe.

Addressing our major societal challenges is not only a question of providing technological solutions. In the design of new policy instruments, aimed to enable systemic change and build more sustainable, inclusive and resilient societies, the co-creation of societal solutions gains attention. This means looking at innovation in the larger sense (technological as well as social innovation) and increasing societal engagement in the adoption of new technologies. Because of their mission and role in and for society, as actors who inspire and inherently experiment with different approaches, the arts and cultural institutions can be key actors in fostering knowledge valorisation. The flourishing of creativity and innovation will benefit citizens and communities.

The European knowledge valorisation strategy places much attention on a more diverse societal engagement involving a multitude of actors in order to create value through innovation benefiting all of society.

The study will provide key insights on how knowledge valorisation policy can strengthen the impact of the arts and cultural institutions and their role in co-creation and demand-driven knowledge valorisation.

The study is carried out by IDEA consult. The results of the study will be available in February 2022.
