During the first quarter of 2024, the European Commission has published three results packs showcasing EU-funded R&I projects that support the implementation of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”.
‘Mission Ocean and Waters’ aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through regional cooperation and broad mobilisation, demonstration and deployment of innovative solutions. It is a coordinated effort to pool the necessary resources in terms of funding programmes, policies and regulations towards this ambitious goal.
Each results pack is related to one of the Mission’s objectives or enablers:
- “Diving deeper: Propelling ocean knowledge and its sustainable management”
This pack relates to Mission Ocean’s Enabler 1: Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System. Published on 23 January, it spotlights 13 EU-funded research projects, emphasising their crucial role in ocean observing for sustainable ocean management. - “Tackling marine litter from source to sea”
This pack showcases projects striving for Mission Ocean’s Objective 2: Prevent and eliminate pollution. Published on 12 February, it highlights 12 EU-funded initiatives that are contributing to the cleaning of aquatic ecosystems, paving the way for a thriving ocean. - “Algae innovation: Sustainable alternatives emerging from European seas and waters”
This pack corresponds to Mission Ocean’s Objective 3: Make the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular. Published on 27 March, it highlights 11 EU-funded projects that demonstrate the versatility of algae and its potential to create innovative products.
These three new publications complement the Cordis pack on Marine biodiversity: Reducing and preventing drivers of marine biodiversity loss, published last year, which focused on the Mission’s Objective 1: Protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.
