Today, the European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S.) have signed a joint statement on research and innovation cooperation, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relationship.
The signature of this statement, under the EU-U.S. Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation, reaffirms the engagement of both sides to deepen their partnership on research and innovation to address pressing global challenges, from climate change to health crises. It also aims to foster scientific excellence and shared values such as openness, academic freedom, research ethics, and evidence-based policymaking.
The joint statement was signed by Marc Lemaitre, Director General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, and Jennifer R. Littlejohn, Acting Assistant Secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs at the US Department of State.
The statement is based on the conclusions of the Joint Consultative Group meeting of March 2024 and cooperation takes place under the EU-U.S. Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation.
Background
The Joint Consultative Group between the European Union and the United States on Science and Technology Cooperation met last in March 2024 in Washington DC. The U.S. is a key non-EU / non-Associated international partner country in Horizon Europe with 1037 participations in 760 projects. The signature of this joint statement is intended to further strengthen the opportunities of collaboration among EU and U.S. researchers and innovators under EU and U.S. research and innovation programmes.
