EU at EuroScience Open Forum 2022: focus on EU Missions and young research talents

The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 will start today in Leiden, European City of Science 2022. This year marks its 10th edition, which will take place until 16 July under the theme “Crossing Borders, Engaged Sciences, Resilient Societies”. The European Union will be present with a dedicated EU pavilion, revolving around the five EU missions as well as young research talents. The pavilion will host the first ever European Talent Fair on Saturday 16 July.  The Fair is designed to increase young people’s job opportunities in the research sectors, help them connect with businesses and improving their employability by equipping them with the necessary marketable skills.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:

ESOF brings together researchers, innovators, policymakers, industry representatives and the public at large to discuss current and future breakthroughs in contemporary science. Synergies between academia and industry, as well as public and private sectors are key for research and innovation to grow its impact. I encourage young researchers to participate in the European Talent Fair to discover new opportunities to advance their careers.

From today until 16 July, the EU pavilion will host a series of virtual and on-site activities to foster dialogue and networking, including TED-style talks, virtual reality, live sketching with young artists and virtual escape games on sustainability and space. A virtual EU booth will also include resources such as factsheets, reports, and videos on a wide range of EU research and innovation topics.

Background

The Commission has been supporting the EuroScience Open Forum since its creation in 2004. It is the largest biennial, pan-European science conference dedicated to scientific research and innovation. Early-career researchers, policymakers and research performing organisations have the opportunity to get together, learn more about the role of science in society and create synergies.

A novelty of Horizon Europe, EU missions aim to bring tangible benefits to people in Europe and engage Europeans in their design, implementation and monitoring. They will support Europe’s transformation into a greener, healthier, more inclusive and resilient continent.
