EU and International Senior Science Advisors call global leaders to take action on climate at COP26

Today, the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission, together with 37 International Senior Scientific Advisers from around the globe, released a joint statement ahead of the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference COP26, calling world leaders to take action for successfully mitigating climate changes and protect our planet.

The statement reiterates the existing scientific consensus on the need for urgent action to combat climate change and points to the central role of science and innovation in adaptation and mitigation.

Specifically, the international science advisors call on global leaders to develop ambitious long-term strategies based on sound scientific evidence, in order to keep the 1.5°C temperature goal alive. They call for an increase in international collaboration to accelerate research, development, demonstration and deployment of effective mitigation and adaptation solutions; and establish programmes to strengthen global research and innovation capacity.

“Reaching carbon neutrality requires innovation, low-emission choices and active participation. Science provides solutions for improving quality of life through fair and sustainable decarbonisation of our societies” stated Professor Nicole Grobert, Chair of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission.

The statement will be presented at COP26 in Glasgow in the context of the “Science and Innovation” day organized by the COP Presidency and discussed at a number of dedicated events including the session organized by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors in the SDG7 Pavilion on November 9th 17.30-18.15 CET (registration opening soon).

The statement builds on the Advisors recent scientific option on a systemic approach to the energy transition in Europe, and their broader work on sustainability and climate change issues such as food systems and the health effects of climate change.

The full text of the statement is available below in the six UN official languages.
