EU and Argentina to cooperate on Open Science

On 7 June 2019, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCyT) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology of Argentina hosted the 11th Joint Steering Committee on cooperation on science and technology between the European Union and Argentina in Buenos Aires. This occasion marked the 20th anniversary of the signing of the EU-Argentina Science and Technology Agreement, which has formed the basis of strong, effective and strategic cooperation between the two regions.

Mr Lino Barañao, Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation of the Ministry of Education and, Culture, Science and Technology of Argentina and Ms. Aude Maio-Coliche, EU Head of Delegation in Argentina opened the meeting. It was co-chaired by Mariano Jordan, Director for international cooperation at MINCyT and Maria Cristina Russo, Director for International Cooperation at the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission.

Both parties agreed to continue developing common principles and the framework conditions needed to create a level playing field for Argentina and the European Union to cooperate in research and innovation based on trust. Underlining the commitment to pursue common approaches to research and innovation and in particular to Open Access, Argentina will join Coalition S, the global coalition promoting open access to scientific results. Argentina expressed its interest in promoting a regional initiative on this topic among the countries from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The major developments in research and innovation policies and programmes since the last Joint Steering Committee meeting were presented. In addition, both delegations exchanged views on and agreed to step up cooperation on the bioeconomy, marine research and health research, among other activities.

At the end of the meeting, the co-chairs underlined the importance of EU-Argentina relations in science and technology to promote research excellence, increase the competitiveness of their industries and address common and global societal challenges.
