The Commission package for attractive and sustainable research careers advances steadily

The Commission’s efforts to enhance research careers of over 2 million researchers in Europe, and in particular for early-career researchers, continue relentlessly. This commitment was showcased at the R&I Days plenary session ‘Research careers: Destination Europe’, that took place on 21 March 16.00-16.30.

Next to the recent Council Recommendation on a European framework to attract and retain research, innovation and entrepreneurial talents in Europe, and the new Charter for Researchers attached to it, a Horizon Europe pilot call will open soon. This initiative will encourage the creation of talent ecosystems where intersectoral partner organizations will join forces for better employability of early-career researchers. In addition, a Mutual Learning Exercise, supported by the Horizon Europe Policy Support Facility, has started. Its goal is to promote the exchange of best practices by Member States on the implementation of the new framework and of the Charter for Researchers. Meanwhile, the ERA Talent Platform, designed as a one-stop-shop for researchers and institutions, along with an observatory on research and innovation careers, are both gearing up for launch.

These new initiatives will build on already existing ones, offering a variegated and comprehensive environment for attractive and competitive research careers. This includes ResearchComp to promote researchers’ transversal skills and foster inter-sectoral mobility and better employability, the EURAXESS portals and services providing mobile researchers globally with essential practical information and job opportunities, and the RESAVER pension fund to foster researchers’ mobility while preserving their pension contributions.
