Celebrating 40 years of Research and Innovation Framework Programme, the European Research & Innovation (R&I) Days 2024 featured a high-level session on the AU-EU Innovation Agenda on 20 March 2024.
The Joint Innovation Agenda represents a cornerstone of R&I cooperation between Africa and Europe, crafted collaboratively over three years under the AU-EU High-Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology, and Innovation and jointly adopted by the AU and the EU on 19 July 2023.
With a high-profile panel including African Union Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, H.E. Prof Mohamed Belhocine, together with Mr Hans Stausboll, Director at the Africa Directorate at DG INTPA as well as Ms Chimwemwe Chamdimba, Head of AUDA-NEPAD Health Policy and Regulatory Harmonization, the session fostered an exchange of ideas about past, present and future opportunities around the joint Innovation Agenda and the Africa-Europe partnership.
The discussion also included a success story testimonial from EDCTP Executive Director, Dr Micheal Makanga, illustrating the tangible impact of the Framework Programmes on innovative ventures relating to societal challenges in the health sector connecting Africa and Europe.
The session has represented the opportunity to launch the “Dashboard of Initiatives”, an interactive virtual tool integrating all projects, programmes, and partnerships officially recognised as contributing to the AU-EU Innovation Agenda's ten-year implementation.
With on-site participants and followers online, the event highlighted transcontinental cooperation and innovation, setting the stage for a future of impactful partnerships and shared prosperity.
