Algeria - EU cooperation in science and technology

A week of bilateral meetings was held in Algiers between 18 and 21 February 2018 in the context of the Algeria-EU Association Agreement in force since 2005.

The week was kicked off on 18 February with two meetings where R&I played a central part. The 6th meeting of the Sub-committee on the Information Society, Research, Innovation Education, Audiovisual and Culture took place in the morning, chaired by Ali Mokrani, the director of cooperation with EU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and John O’Rourke, the EU Ambassador to Algeria. Algerian participation under Horizon 2020 and related initiatives (PRIMA, BLUEMED) as well as the priorities for R&I cooperation under Horizon Europe were part of the discussions.

The afternoon was dedicated to the 4th meeting of the Algeria - EU Joint Science & Technology Coordination Committee (JSTCC). Here, representatives of the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and of DG RTD exchanged views on the further implementation of the bilateral S&T agreement, in particular as it concerns supporting the optimum exploitation of the results of research and development. Other meetings were held during the week in the fields of justice, human rights, mobility and migration.

The R&I dialogue between policymakers was complemented by a technical training on participation to Horizon 2020. A two-day seminar organised by DG RTD in collaboration with the Agence thématique de recherche en sciences et technologie (ATRST) on 19 and 20 February provided around 120 Algerian researchers and innovators the tools for integrating Euro-Mediterranean consortia and engaging in mobility actions.
