Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment: now open for signature

On 28 September 2022, the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment was officially opened for signature during a plenary session at the European Research and Innovation Days. The Agreement had been published on 20 July and was the result of a co-creation process involving more than 350 organisations from 40 countries.

The event featured the participation of Mariya Gabriel (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth), Sylvie Retailleau (French Minister for Higher Education and Research), Lidia Borrell-Damián (Secretary General of Science Europe), Paul Boyle (Vice-President of the European University Association – EUA), and Anna Panagopoulou (Director of European Research Area & Innovation in the European Commission). Panellists highlighted the Agreement as a catalyst of change for more efficient and effective research and innovation systems, and called on the research community at large to support this timely, future-looking and transformative initiative.

Already 51 organisations from across Europe declared their commitment to sign the Agreement, and were announced as “early signatories” of the Agreement during the session. The event also officially unveiled the website of the future Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). Organisations were invited to sign the Agreement through the dedicated form on this website, which will, from now on, serve as the main source of information about the Agreement and the developments of this initiative.

Science Europe, the European University Association (EUA) and European Commission services, with the advice from an Implementation Group composed of representatives of 10 organisations from across Europe, are currently drafting proposed governance, operation and funding modalities of the future Coalition. These will be discussed during a 4th Stakeholder Assembly planned for 13 October 2022, with the official launch of the Coalition expected to take place in December 2022.
