5th Science Forum South Africa

The 2019 Science Forum South Africa took place at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, on 4-6 December 2019. The topic of exchanges this year was Igniting Conversations About Science For Innovation With Impact.

Deputy Director General for Research and Innovation Patrick Child spoke at the Forum’s Opening Session, following the speech of Dr. Blade Nzimande, South African Minister of Higher Education, Training, Science and Technology.

In his statement, DDG Patrick Child delivered 3 main messages: local innovation is a crucial driver of economic development and social prosperity everywhere in the world; public intervention in R&D are needed, also to back up risky investments to disruptive innovation; the European Union is stepping up its cooperation on innovation with Africa.

DDG P. Child presented the Africa-Europe Innovation Partnership, recently launched by DG Research and Innovation, and acknowledged the EU is proud to support South Africa's National System of Innovation through a budget support allocation amounting 15 MEUR.

Finally, the importance of enhancing further the long-standing successful cooperation in science and innovation between the EU and South Africa was stressed.
