From 17 to 18 December 2025, scientists, diplomats, and other stakeholders are gathering in Copenhagen for the 2nd European Science Diplomacy Conference: Bridging divides in a fragmented world, organised by the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing geopolitical and scientific-technological landscape, science diplomacy is playing an ever more important role in shaping Europe’s international engagement.

Following the 1st European Science Diplomacy Conference in December 2023 under the Spanish Council Presidency, this edition brings together around 600 members of the science diplomacy community from Europe and beyond and discusses next steps for a European framework for science diplomacy, building on the expert report A European Framework for Science Diplomacy – Recommendations of the EU Science Diplomacy Working Groups released earlier this year.

The conference is examining how science diplomacy can strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, foster innovation, and promote international cooperation. The programme explores both regional and thematic dimensions, while also highlighting the crucial contributions of non-state actors, providing a platform for policymakers, scientists, diplomats, business, and civil society to engage in a dialogue on Europe’s role as a global science and technology leader, committed to peace, multilateralism, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Background

The European Science Diplomacy Conference takes place at the Copenhagen Business School and is organised in cooperation with the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, the Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy, Aarhus University, and the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy.
