13 October 2021: the next edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2021

On 13 October 2021, the European Commission and European Committee of the Regions are co-organising two sessions under the KEP 2.0 umbrella on Science and Innovation for Recovery.

Session 1: Regions boosting the European Green Recovery

09:30-11:00

Regions and cities are key players in addressing major societal and environmental challenges that the EU is facing to achieve a green and digital future for Europe. The Resilience and Recovery Plans give an incredible opportunity to overcome these challenges through investments and reforms: the discussion will highlight the catalysing role of research and innovation to achieve the twin transition underpinning the crucial role of local and regional authorities in the phase of implementation of the Plans.

Anna Panagopoulou, Director, DG Research and Innovation, will introduce the session and give a keynote on research and innovation for a sustainable recovery of Europe.

This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on role of regions and cities in the recovery towards the green transition and the importance of science in this process.

Session 2: Science for the Green Deal – Evidence for Policy in Regions and Cities

11:30-13:00

Regions and cities are the key players in delivering on the ambitious goals of the Green transition. They need to be supported and given adapted tools in order to design and implement evidence-based and innovation-oriented policies. This workshop will provide an overview of a number of these tools, notably the European missions, and allow the regional and local stakeholders to enter into discussion with the panellists, all of which are heavily invested in making the Green transition a reality.

Anne Karjalainen, Chair of the Commission for Social Policy, Education, Employment, Research and Culture of the European Committee of the Regions, will give an introductory keynote speech.

This will be followed by a roundtable discussion.
