European Capital of Innovation 2014 - Barcelona

Barcelona was named the first European Capital of Innovation. Grenoble and Groningen were the runners-up.

Barcelona city council championed the “Barcelona as a people city” project by introducing new technologies to foster economic growth and the welfare of its citizens.

Such technologies looked at a wide variety of fields such as

  • use of open data
  • sustainable initiatives for smart lighting, mobility, and residual energy
  • promoting alliances between research centres, universities, private and public partners, and various other ICT initiatives
