Third Arctic Science Ministerial – ASM3

The 3rd Arctic Science Ministerial will be co-organised by Japan and Iceland and take place on 8 and 9 May 2021, in Tokyo and also virtually.

Commissioner Mariya Gabriel will attend the 3rd Arctic Science Ministerial (ASM3) on 8 and 9 May.

ASM3 “Knowledge for a sustainable Arctic”, co-organised by Japan and Iceland in Tokyo (JP), will focus on four priorities:

  • Observe - Observing networks; Data sharing –towards implementation
  • Understand - Enhance understanding and prediction capability on Arctic environmental and social systems and its global impact
  • Respond - Sustainable development; Evaluation of vulnerability and resilience; Application of knowledge
  • Strengthen - Capacity building; Education; Networking; Resilience –prepare the next generation

The main outcome of ASM3 will be a Joint Statement to be signed by the Ministers of 27 participating Countries, proposing actions along the above-mentioned four priorities. Commissioner Gabriel is expected to sign this Joint Statement on behalf of the European Union on 9 May 2021.

Webinar series

This webinar series was designed to increase transparency of the Arctic Science Ministerial science process and to provide additional opportunities for scientists, Indigenous Peoples and Arctic research stakeholders to further engage with the science and proposed actions leading up to the Third Arctic Science Ministerial in Tokyo, Japan in May 2021. The webinar series is a joint cooperation between the ASM3 co-hosts, Iceland and Japan, and the European Polar Board.
