Opportunity or Threat: receiving refugees in Canada and the effects of the Global Compacts on Refugees and Migrants

One of three virtual Expert Forums organized by the PROTECT Consortium

This is one of three virtual Expert Forums organized by the PROTECT Consortium aimed at discussing the implementation and performance of the Global Compacts on Refugees and Migrants in Europe, Canada, and South Africa. In this forum, an expert panel will address current challenges of Canadian refugee protection, both in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Global Compacts and existing obligations and legal frameworks.

The event will explore the status of refugee rights and protection in Canada in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the objectives outlined in two UN Compacts on Refugees and Migrants, and in the 1951 Convention.

By providing views from different institutions and organizations involved in refugee protection in Canada, the webinar will consider challenges faced by refugees in specific contexts, such as employment, healthcare, and detention.

The Expert Forum takes place online on 20 November from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, EST.

Speakers include Anthony Navaneelan from Legal Aid Ontario, Mac Scott from No One is Illegal, Mary-Jo Leddy from Romero House and Rana Khan from UNHCR. Dr. Delphine Nakache from the University of Ottawa is the discussant and Associate Professor Idil Atak chairs the panel.
