Framings of food and implications for policy, food security and sustainability in Europe

Virtual mini-symposium at the International Conference on Global Food Security

The European Commission’s (EC) Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) recently published an Evidence Review Report by SAPEA and a Scientific Opinion by the EC’s Chief Scientific Advisors with policy recommendations that informed the new EC’s Farm to Fork Strategy of the European Green Deal.

This mini-symposium proposes to focus on the question of framings of food, a fundamental starting point that lays the ground for the whole food system.

The first and overarching policy recommendation of the scientific opinion is to “View food more as a common good and not just as a consumer good”. This recommendation is informed by SAPEA’s Evidence Review Report, which reviews the best up-to-date evidence on several theoretical perspectives and framings of food that have profound implications for the development of policy initiatives.
