Background
The Cultural Heritage Cloud - or European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH) - is an ambitious European Union initiative, supported with around € 110 million from Horizon Europe, to create a digital infrastructure that will connect cultural heritage researchers and professionals across the EU and enable advanced collaboration and co-creation. It is developing specific digital collaborative tools for the sector and will remove barriers for smaller and remote institutions to benefit from the opportunities offered by advanced digital technologies.
The Cultural Heritage Cloud will add a new digital dimension to cultural heritage preservation, conservation, restoration and enhancement by providing cutting-edge technologies, for instance for the digitization of artefacts or for researching artworks.
The implementation of this initiative is now in process with the EU-funded project ECHOES - European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science building the Cloud infrastructure. The project started on the 1st of June 2024. Three sister projects were selected under the 2023 call:
- AUTOMATA - AUTOMated enriched digitisation of Archaeological liThics and cerAmics
- TEXTaiLES - TEXTile digitisAtIon tooLs and mEthodS for cultural heritage
- HERITALISE - Heritage buildings and objects' digitisation & visualisation within the cloud
From the 2024 ECCCH call on creating innovative tools, 10 new projects were selected, for a total of 48 million euro. The projects will be presented during the webinar:

- StratiGraph - Knowledge Graphs for Stratigraphy
High-value interactions with visitors and heritage objects
- UNICHE - Unified No-Code platform for Interactive Cultural Heritage Experiences
- PlaceMUS XR - Digital Journey across Musical Places in Europe and Extended Realities
Study, conservation and restoration of heritage objects
- EXCALIBUR - Advanced toolkits for interdisciplinary and enhanced study, conservation, and restoration in burial excavations and findings
- COLOURS - Collaborative On-cloud Lab for the conservation and digital restoration of ColOUred heritage collectionS
